Zeus Quest 1.1-Point-and-click fun in ancient Greece

March 24th, 2009

If you’re a fan of point-and-click adventure classics such as Day of the Tentacle or Monkey Island, then fire up Zeus Quest on your mobile and get ready for some fun.

Zeus Quest manages is set in ancient Greece, where you play Zeus, the boss of Olympus. You mission is somewhat of a mystery but it’s something to do with a spacecraft crashing into the sea around 1000 BC. In fact, you start completely unaware of anything other than the fact you’re on a beach with two sunbathers and a goat.

Even the game controls aren’t explained to you, but you soon figure out that Zeus Quest plays in much the same way as those Lucas Arts classics. You just click on the eye icon next to an object to view it, or the hand option to talk to or perform an action on an object. There’s a small, yet well-labeled menu at the foot of the screen which houses an inventory of objects that you can pick up and use to solve puzzles or unlock mysteries.

Zeus Quest is a very well presented game, with colorful backgrounds, detailed cartoon characters, and clearly-displayed text. The music is pretty good too.

However, it’s the gameplay where Zeus Quest really comes into its own. Some of the puzzles are devilishly difficult, the dialogues are detailed and often hilarious, and you get to explore a huge game world spread across the Aegean islands. It’s just a shame this demo version is so limited.

Zeus Quest is one of the most fun mobile adventure games we’ve seen in a while, and has all the makings of a Greek legend.

The Final Battle 1.3-Save the princess in this nostalgic graphical adventure

March 24th, 2009

I used to really enjoy those graphical adventure games that were very popular on the PC in the late 80s and early 90s, and Final Battle provides the chance to revisit those salad days. The plot is a similar one – you wake up in a dungeon and must save a princess who’s been captured by an evil madman. OK, so I admit not much thought really went into the overall mission, but there are plenty of riddles, twists and turns to keep you intrigued by the plot for a long while.

The game boasts all the ingredients of those old adventure romps: interactive dialogues with weird and wonderful characters, lots of weapons and objects to collect, and a smattering of hidden areas to explore. There are more than 50 different levels to explore, although as you proceed some of them become annoyingly taxing to the point where you want to give up and throw your Palm in the bin.

Part of the reason why The Final Battle kept me going until – well, the final battle, is its gorgeous graphics and superb soundtrack. The drawings are detailed and colourful and the audio captures the mood of the adventure perfectly. There are lots of nice cut-scenes and intro sequences, although I must point out that the quality of written English used is pretty bad at times. Maybe that’s just me being picky though.

On the whole, The Final Battle is a captivating game that perfectly recreates the old graphical adventure genre to help transport you back to the 80s.

Fish Tycoon 1.0-Produce and maintain a thriving fish tank

March 24th, 2009

Fish breeding may not be the most obvious choice for a computer game, but Fish Tycoon really makes a splash.

The aim of Fish Tycoon is to grow a thriving tank of fish through feeding them, cross-breeding the different types of fish, and treating any illnesses they might pick up. The ultimate aim is to create seven types of hybrid rare species of fish in order to win the game.

If you’re expecting a face-paced action game then you’ll be sorely disappointed by Fish Tycoon. The game is essentially Tamagotchi-style affair, in which your fish will grow and breed over a long period of time (the fish will even grow old when your device is turned off). Fish Tycoon is quite easy to get into, thanks to a handy tutorial mode, and you’ll soon discover how to hatch eggs, feed, and care for the fish.

The graphics in Fish Tycoon are colorful and the fish are quite realistic. There are a few nice sound effects, though not enough in my opinion.

Overall, Fish Tycoon is a fun way of learning how to create your own aquarium – without killing any real fish.

Mars Needs Cows 2.1.5-Help the Martians beam up animals from Earth

March 24th, 2009

It seems that the Martians aren’t content with the animals they have on their planet because according to the plot of Mars Needs Cows, Mars needs cows.

As bizarre as it might sound, the aliens have decided they want to plunder the Earth for our livestock. In Mars Needs Cows you must help the E.T.s collect all the farmyard animals in a series of puzzles of increasing difficulty.

The puzzles in Mars Needs Cows consist of trying to move each of the animals that the aliens need onto the ‘X’ square. You do this by clicking on the animal you want to move, then choosing the direction you want it to move in, using the d-pad. Watch out though, because the animals will not stop moving in that direction unless there is something to block them. As a result, the challenge of each puzzle is to tactically maneuver each animal in order to complete the mission.

There are more than 2,000 unique puzzles in Mars Needs Cows, and as you score points and progress through the game, your rank in the alien military increases. The only trouble with this demo version is that the puzzles are a bit too easy and it quickly gets a bit repetitive and boring, although there are three difficulty levels in the full version of the game.

The graphics and sounds in Mars Needs Cows are very amusing (or should I say a-moo-sing?) and are full of funny farmyard noises and cartoon imagery.

Mars Needs Cows is a sprawling puzzle game with a sense of humor. It can get a bit repetitive though.

Paintball II 1.97-Perplexing ball-painting puzzler

March 24th, 2009

I played paintball once and nearly lost a thumb so, for me, a version where it’s impossible to get hurt is something I’d love to see. Unfortunately Crazysoft Paintball isn’t an exact copy of the barbaric shooting-people-in-a-field game, but it does involve paint. And balls.

The goal of this puzzle game is to join three or more balls of the same colour and ensure they are next to a pipe. Once in place, you select them then splat them with paint using the action key. The balls will then change colour and get sucked into the pipe, leaving more space on the board for you to make your next batch.

It’s an interesting twist on an over-done gaming concept, and as you master the combos and pump up the points, it becomes more and more addictive. What’s more, the longevity of the game is extended by the inclusion of five different game modes.

Besides the normal challenge, you also get a Hard mode, where the paint reserve dips very quickly; Panic mode, where you have 100 seconds to score as many points as you can; Heat mode, where ball groups are taken only when they are next to a ‘hot’ (red) pipe; and the mind-boggling Chroma mode, where you have to use different colour combinations rather than balls of the same colour.

With the addition of multi-player mode via Bluetooth, Crazysoft Paintball will have you swapping paint for points for quite some time.
