Metro 5.7.2 – Metro Guide Of Over 300 Cities Worldwide

November 22nd, 2008

Palm PDA users are often on the move and this explains the large number of applications geared towards helping travellers wherever they go. One of the most successful travel programs available for handheld computers is this free guide to the subway systems in over 300 cities worldwide.

Métro has a very basic interface which can be a little tricky to read if you haven’t taken a look at the user guide. Once used to the controls, though, the average user will have no further trouble with this program. Use it to plan journeys, guide you between subway and railway stations, or to help you find places of interest such as museums or government buildings.

For such a small application, it holds a surprising amount of details and with frequent updates, you don’t need to worry about out-of-date information.

RDM+ Remote Desktop 3.7.34 – Control your PC from your PDA

November 22nd, 2008

With so much of our work and home activities based around our PC, it often feels that you’re chained to the desk 24/7. Sometimes even while you’re out and about you’re probably itching to get home and check your emails or finish that Word document. Thanks to Remote Desktop for Mobiles you don’t have to worry because the program lets you access your Windows desktop from wherever you are.

Basically, RDM + Remote Desktop can activate a new channel of communication between the two systems. In this way, you can interact with the Windows desktop, from your PDA starting or stopping services, viewing system resources, restarting or shutting down the machine remotely, among other possibilities.

To enable the connection, the program uses a BES meeting, BIS, TCP / IP or http. It supports password access, includes a system of encryption to protect transfers and has a number of options for rapid mapping functions on the keys of your device.

This software doesn’t give you access to all the apps on your computer but ultimately, if you want to control the basic functions of your PC from your PDA, RDM + Remote Desktop is a sound choice.

BookWorm 2.0 – Play the popular classic on your Palm

November 22nd, 2008

I found two caterpillars in my salad yesterday, so at the moment little grubs aren’t my favorite creatures. As a result, I was not looking forward to playing a game where I had to help out a worm. However, I love word games, which made the prospect of trying out this part-crossword, part-word jumbler, part puzzler a little more appetizing.

Bookworm sees you assume the role of a librarian who must keep the Lex the worm fed with words. The bookworm eats the words you find and you’re points total goes up. The longer the word, the more points you get. It’s a simple concept which proves mightily addictive. The challenge of the game is to join as many words as possible before the tiles fall down and the whole board goes up in flames.

Bookworm is great fun for a while but its longevity is hampered by the fact that there is little variety in the game as you progress.

Game Timer 1.04 – Time your chess matches with this handy tool

November 22nd, 2008

Any chess player knows the importance of having a clock to hand in order to time each player’s moves.

Game Timer gives you the ability to keep track of these times using your Palm device. It couldn’t be simpler to use – you have two time displays, one for each player, along with a ‘Switch’ button. After starting the count, each player hits the ‘Switch’ button when their move is finished and the other player’s counter starts ticking down.

There are a few options you can tweak to customize Game Timer. For instance, you can change the time limit, set handicaps, add a Pause button and configure hardware buttons to control the timers.

In terms of its visuals, Game Timer isn’t going to win any beauty contests, and there’s not much of a user interface to it. That said, the buttons are large enough to be quickly tapped by a finger.

It’s not the most fully featured application in history, but Game Timer might come in handy if you’re a regular chess player.
