Iris Browser 1.1.2-Enjoy an improved online experience on your phone

February 26th, 2009 No comments

2009 could finally be the year when the mobile Internet really takes off. Up to now, browsing the web on a handheld device has been a painstaking process. Things are changing though thanks to factors such as faster connections and improved mobile Internet software.

Iris Browser is an example of the kind of tool that is helping to improve the mobile web ecosystem. Based on the powerful, standards-based WebKit environment, the application provides a secure and reliable platform for enjoying online content in the way it was intended.

One thing you’ll notice about Iris Browser is that it makes viewing content so much easier than it is in Pocket Internet Explorer. It’s very touch-friendly, so you can tap anywhere on a page then drag it around in the display. Zooming in and out of pages is as easy as double-tapping on the screen. Navigation is aided by a mini whole page preview which pops up in the corner of the page.

Iris Browser supports tabbed browsing and you can switch between these tabs through a visual, coverflow-style interface. Flicking between the pages produces an animated swoosh, and there are lots of these kind of special effects used throughout the browser.

Unfortunately all of these bells and whistles seem to slow Iris Browser down a bit too much, and it’s certainly a lot more laggy than the likes of Opera Mobile or Skyfire.

It’s touch-friendly features make Iris Browser enjoyable to use, but you’ll probably get irritated by the slow rendering times.

RDM+ Remote Desktop 3.7.4-Control your PC from your PDA

February 26th, 2009 No comments

With so much of our work and home activities based around our PC, it often feels that you’re chained to the desk 24/7. Sometimes even while you’re out and about you’re probably itching to get home and check your emails or finish that Word document. Thanks to Remote Desktop for Mobiles you don’t have to worry because the program lets you access your Windows desktop from wherever you are.

Basically, RDM + Remote Desktop can activate a new channel of communication between the two systems. In this way, you can interact with the Windows desktop, from your PDA starting or stopping services, viewing system resources, restarting or shutting down the machine remotely, among other possibilities.

To enable the connection, the program uses a BES meeting, BIS, TCP / IP or http. It supports password access, includes a system of encryption to protect transfers and has a number of options for rapid mapping functions on the keys of your device.

This software doesn’t give you access to all the apps on your computer but ultimately, if you want to control the basic functions of your PC from your PDA, RDM + Remote Desktop is a sound choice.

Bubblet 1.8.1-Addictive ball-matching puzzle game

February 26th, 2009 No comments

I’ve lost count of the number of Palm games I’ve played where you have to remove matching shapes by linking them together somehow. It’s a testament to the format that I’m still getting hooked on these kind of games after all these years.

As its developer warns, Bubblet is not a game to be playing if you have a deadline to make. The process of matching similarly-colored bubbles together in order to pop them and clear the board is something that’s ridiculously addictive. In fact, I’m amazed I managed to put down my Palm and come and write this review.

Bubblet is very simple to play – it’s just a case of tapping on the screen to form groups of matching colors, and repeating the process until you’ve cleared as many bubbles as you can. To make things more interesting, there are several different game modes, and even a multiplayer option where up to four of you can go head to head in a burst-off.

The only thing that really lets Bubblet down is its graphics, which are very plain and simple.

But if its addictive gameplay that you’re looking for then Bubblet won’t let you down.

Agendus Standard Edition 13.03-Powerful personal information manager for Palm PDAs

February 26th, 2009 No comments

When I was younger (in fact, it still applies now) I always wanted to have James Bond’s Miss Moneypenny as my secretary. As I grow older, I realize this is becoming less and less likely to happen. However, I’ve just stumbled across a mobile app that will give me almost the next best thing.

Agendus is an excellent personal information manager designed to make you more you a more productive human being through your Palm. The application combines the different standard applications such as address book, notepad, tasks and email, and supports data synchronization with Microsoft Outlook.

It’s incredible to be able to manage and access so much information from one place, and it’s certainly much more efficient than the Palm operating system. The program centralizes a huge range of tasks, including managing contacts, appointments, tasks, notes, SMS and emails.

There’s a whole bunch of stuff you can do with this information using Agendus, such as displaying data in daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly views, grouping, editing and deleting. A powerful built-in full-text search ensures that whatever you need is always close at hand. Everything is very simple to synchronize too, using ActiveSync.

Thanks to an intuitive centralized interface and some slick integration with Outlook, this really is a product you can’t afford to be without if you have a busy personal or professional life.

Belltime Lite 1.3-Multi-function clock with multiple alarms

February 26th, 2009 No comments

If you’re the kind of person who’s always missing meetings, events or even birthdays then perhaps it’s time you did something about it.

Don’t worry though, because all you need to ensure that you’re always on time for everything is your Palm handset. Belltime is one of a number of clock apps for the platform, though this one offers a lot more than most of them, allowing you to control the passing of time in a highly visual and intuitive way.

At its core, Belltime is a clock with the time and date, but the difference with this one is that the program’s interface can be customized with 20 different elements, including alarms, stopwatches, timers and even an MP3 player window.

Once you’ve set up all the different alarms and timepieces your Palm will be looking like something from an Eighties James Bond film (Live and Let Die, perhaps) and you’ll have a multitude of functions accessible from one place. The trouble is, with all these different windows and dials on display at once things can get a little confusing and the interface is somewhat cluttered.

Nevertheless, if you want to make sure that you’re always on time for everything, Belltime provides you with oodles of functionality.
