File Juicer 4.11 – Extract images, video, audio and text from any file

File Juicer helps you extract anything you want from a file, whether it be an image, a video, sound or text. Just drag and drop your file or folder on the File Juicer interface and the application will get to work.

File Juicer organizes extracted files in clean folders and the application will open up a new Finder window once the extraction process is done, so you can reach those files immediately. I’ve noticed that File Juicer tends to create a text file every time you extract something, although it’s not always necessary.

You don’t need to limit your use of File Juicer to simple extraction though. The program can also be used to examine cache files, turn PDFs into Word documents or recover text from corrupt files. If used well, it can be a really handy tool to have around.

If there’s something you need to extract from a file or folder, File Juicer can get it for you.

iTunes 8.0.2 – Apple’s famous digital jukebox

Mac users are often said to be the most loyal customers in the computer market, but that’s because they have very good reasons, such as iTunes, to stick to Apple products. And if I were in your shoes, I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to have this application on my Windows PC.

iTunes has become one of the most popular music managers available today. When you run it for the first time, you can choose your music folders or let the program take care of everything. Then you can keep on adding new music, videos, podcasts and other multimedia elements from various sources and – of course – synchronize all this content with your iPod or iPhone thanks to a perfectly seamless integration.

Managing your iTunes library is a piece of cake. The program’s interface is simple and straightforward, plus there are right-click shortcuts and keyboard hotkeys for many tasks. You can view extended information about each track and edit their tags, give them a score with the iTunes star ranking tool and comfortably browse through your collection with the amazing Cover Flow system. And for those of you who work in a LAN environment, the great news is that you can share your music libraries with your network mates.

One thing I particularly like of iTunes as music manager is its ability to create playlists. The Smart Playlist tool enables you to create almost any kind of playlist based on just about any criteria you set: artist, genre, date added, star ranking or even the number of times you’ve played each song. Another great playlist is the so called Party Shuffle, which comes in very handy when you invite some friends over to your place. You can then leave iTunes working as a DJ and play music on its own, but if you drop by the PC at any time, you can freely add more songs to the list or rearrange them in any way.

However, if there’s something where iTunes is not perfect yet, that’s the player function. You may disagree here, but I think the iTunes player falls too short, especially when compared to its music manager side. It does have some interesting features, like the Smart shuffle function and crossfading playback, but I still find it too simple. The visual effects in the Viewer window are particularly poor. I also missed the ability to control the player from anywhere with global hotkeys, which is great if you listen to music while you’re working on the PC with other apps. Fortunately there are some plug-ins that cover this need.

In all, despite these slight flaws, iTunes is probably the best choice to manage your music collection –and that includes Windows users.

Speakapedia 1.1 – Listen to Wikipedia entries

Wikipedia is one of the best resources on the internet but it still doesn’t fully cater for hard of seeing or blind internet users.

Speakapedia is a simple tool for Mac OS X which creates podcasts from Wikipedia articles. It’s great for those with hearing difficulties or those that have trouble reading on their Mac. You can use the Speakapedia interface to browse and choose articles and then download them directly to your iPod or iPhone.

Speakapedia features a dedicated browser to navigate Wikipedia and once you click on “Speak It!” it shows you the different parts of the article that can be translated into audio format. All non essential text is filtered out, leaving just the main article text. You can also choose which sections within your article you wish to convert to speech. You can listen to some examples on the developer website and while it works well, the voices obviously sound very robotic and some words are hard to understand.

Speakapedia provides a quick and easy way to translate Wikipedia articles into something that those with poor eye sight can at least understand.

Zoiper 2.07 – VoIP client supporting high quality protocols

Zoiper 2.0 Free (previously known as Idefisk) is a telephony application that provides basic and advanced VoIP functionalities at very low cost.

Unlike more popular VoIP apps, Zoiper Free supports supports more advanced telephony standards such as T.38 Fax over IP and Asterisk and SIP-capable IP-based communication systems and infrastructures. Zoiper definitely looks slick and offers things such as a contacts book, call history, videoconferencing, call forwarding and the ability to easily manage multiple accounts.

Zoiper integrates into Outlook and provides support for high quality voice codecs such as GSM, Speex, ILBC or 711th/u. The developers claim that this provides one of the highest quality audio you’ll find on a VoIP app and prevents the annoying echo that affects many of them. The problems start when voice quality or call quality declines – its hard to tell whether this is a result of Zoiper or the VoIP client you’re using it with.

Overall, Zoiper is an interesting product and could help improve your call quality although it’s a bot of a hassle using it when Skype provides more or less the same quality voice quality and user friendliness.

Ranaremake 1.0 – Help Mervyn the wizard beat the warlocks

Ranaremake is a remake of the classic late ’80s game Ranarama where you play the role of Mervyn, a magician turned frog that must defeat the Black Warlocks Black and his army of ugly helpers.

The feel of Ranaremake reminds me of Citadel which I last played on the Atari ST about 20 years ago except Ranaremake has much better graphics and effects of course. Ranaremake is set within a labyrinth of dungeons where you’re on the search for treasure while destroying enemies along the way.

Your weapons are guns and spells which help you reveal and blow apart both your enemies and hidden doors in an effort to destroy everything in your wake. However, the more spells you use the more your energy decreases. You can cast different types of spells – some that destroy black warlocks and others that reveal hidden trap doors and secrets. Your task is to know when to cast the right spell at the right time.

Ranaremake is a complex and fun ghosts, demons, wizards and warlocks platform game that takes some getting into but when you do, the rewards are worth it.

DiscLabel 5.4 – Make labels for your CDs and DVDs

Labeling a CD or DVD can give it your own personal touch as long as you do it right. DiscLabel takes you through it in an intuitive interface and offers loads of templates to work with. The program can import images and track lists from pretty much any source, like iTunes, iPhoto or Toast, giving you complete freedom as to the content you use to assemble your labels.

With the release of the latest version, DiscLabel has made more 1,300 clip art items available via download, which can be browsed by tag and keyword. However users will also find a huge range of different templates in the program itself. DiscLabel makes a few editing tools available at the bottom. Users can add text, draw lines and shapes and add a few effects. These felt a little bit limited compared to all the templates and clip art items made avalaible.

After you’ve created your label you generally want to print it out. DiscLabel makes this easy to do on any sort of paper or paper type and you can even print directly on a CD. For those of you that don’t want to bother with creating labels, the program even offers access to its own DiscLabel store, where you’ll be able to purchase labels, cases and blank media.

DiscLabel is a no-fuss solution to making and printing out labels for your CDs and DVDs.
