PalmaryClock Wireless 1.41 – Download weather forecasts and more in this neat Palm app

October 12th, 2008 No comments

Boasting 1300 cities worldwide, automatic updates of weather and currency data and scheduled tasks, the application quickly becomes an essential tool for anyone who likes to have up to the minute info with them around the clock.

One of the best features PalmaryClock Wireless offers is the repeating alarm clock. This option allows you to set an alarm to repeat on certain days (a function I use all the time: no one wants to be woken at 6.55 am on a Saturday!), and can also run an application of your choice at a given time.

PalmaryClock Wireless is fully skinnable, making for a completely personalized experience, and has a version specially ‘tweaked’ for Treo 600/650 devices. This, taken alongside a stunning design and beautiful graphics, even on the lo-resolution Treo 600, makes PalmaryClock Wireless my top recommendation for programs of its type.

Metro 5.7.1 – Metro Guide Of Over 300 Cities Worldwide

October 12th, 2008 No comments

Palm PDA users are often on the move and this explains the large number of applications geared towards helping travellers wherever they go. One of the most successful travel programs available for handheld computers is this free guide to the subway systems in over 300 cities worldwide.

Métro has a very basic interface which can be a little tricky to read if you haven’t taken a look at the user guide. Once used to the controls, though, the average user will have no further trouble with this program. Use it to plan journeys, guide you between subway and railway stations, or to help you find places of interest such as museums or government buildings.

For such a small application, it holds a surprising amount of details and with frequent updates, you don’t need to worry about out-of-date information.

Arcade Park 1.5 – Relive the glory of these classic games!

October 12th, 2008 No comments

I used to love those bundles of games you could buy for Spectrum, C64, Amiga, etc., where you could pick up four or five classics in the same pack for about 5 bucks. I once even had a Game Boy cartridge with 150 games on it. Arcade Park is a similar affair, this time offering eight top games from yesterday on one download.

The package includes Arcade Ball, Asteroids, Rushman, Digger, Gold Hunter, Galaxy Invaders, Real Tanx and Riverside Assault. You can read detailed descriptions of each of them in the developer’s description below, but let me tell you now that each of them is a real classic, and most have been enhanced from theire original form by the introduction of crisp new graphics.

All of the games feature some kind of options for changing game modes, or playing around with the difficulty settings, though disappointly, there’s a lack of two-player offerings. As always with these games, there are lots of bonuses and different types of enemies to keep things varied. You also get a hall of fame and records chart for the challenge of getting your name up in lights.

If you remember these retro game from back in the day, or even if you don’t, Arcade Park makes for an interesting diversion.

Brixster 1.1 – Eliminate the blocks to reveal the picture

October 12th, 2008 No comments

If you’re looking for a simple puzzle game to kill some time on the bus then install Brixster onto your Palm.

Brixster is an easy-to-play game where your mission is to reveal the picture behind the grid. You do this by connecting Tetris-style blocks together in order to complete lines. Once you’ve made a line, the blocks in that row will disappear and a part of the picture behind will be revealed.

Brixster is one of those games you can pick up and start using without really thinking. Moving the pieces is just a matter of tapping on the piece you wish to move then clicking on the space you wish to insert that block.

That’s about it really. There aren’t any options or settings to speak of, and you simply proceed through increasing levels of difficulty. Unfortunately the demo version of Brixster is quite limited, and you can only play a maximum of five levels before the trial runs out.

Nevertheless, if you want a quick-fix of puzzle action, Brixster provides an amusing diversion.

Westward 1.00 – Wild West strategy adventure

October 12th, 2008 No comments

If John Wayne were still alive today, Westward would undoubtedly be his mobile game of choice for long bus journeys (or wagon trips, come to think of it).

Westward sees you face the challenge of controlling the Wild West, by building booming towns, exploring unchartered plains, guiding settlers to success, and protecting citizens from outlaws. The game boasts four different locations, with more than 20 levels to explore.

Westward starts with a tutorial level, where a teacher guides you through the process of discovering new lands, fighting bandits, harvesting food and water, and building houses, farms and factories. The controls are well explained and it’s pretty easy to pick up the basics from these tutorials.

I like the way that Westward doesn’t try to tie you to playing as one character. All of the citizens, sheriffs and deputies can be controlled independently of each other, and the challenge of the game lies in utilizing each one to their full potential.

Like many strategy games, Westward always displays the current tasks that you need to work on, and once you’ve achieved a mission, a new one pops up straight away. This makes it a game that’s awfully hard to put down, because the temptation of playing “just one more mission” is tough to resist.

In terms of its presentation, Westward looks and sounds great with some lovely attention to detail. The background music is typical of those old western movie soundtracks and there are some realistic sound effects. Although the game’s graphics are incredibly detailed, I found them just a little bit too small for viewing on a mobile device. What’s more, the animation is a little slow and you seem to spend a lot of time waiting for characters to move from one place to another.

Overall though, Westward makes for a rip-roaring, gun-slinging, mobile adventure that’s very difficult to put down.
