Chronos 3.9.4 – Multiple alarms, clocks and countdown timers for Pocket PC

September 3rd, 2008

Use Chronos to to save valuable time and avoid looking at the clock every minute. Chronos fills the gap in Windows Mobile operating system by offering:

  • Unlimited number of highly customizable alarms
  • Unlimited number of countdown timers
  • 2 multi-stage lap timers

Chronos alarms offer complete control over alarm behavior:

  • Alarms can be set to signal only on certain days of the week, they can be one-time or repetitive.
  • Alarm can notify you by playing sounds (unique: MP3 support), turning on/off vibration, blinking the LED.
  • You can select custom sound stored in memory or on the storage card.
  • The sound can be played with ascending volume and in loops (i.e. as many times as you need).
  • Vibration (requires hardware availability of the feature) can be set to work before or with the sound. Pulsation is customizable too.

Countdown timers are used to notify you when certain amount of time elapses. Countdown timers can have two time periods (second period starts after first period of time is complete). You can completely customize sound and vibro notifications for the timer (in the same way as for alarm). Settings of each countdown timer can be saved as a template for future use.

Two multi-stage timers let you count time of some action and compare results of two attempts. You can use timer to fix intermediate results (for example when you run 5 laps, you can track time of each lap).

An extensive, full featured ‘time tool’ for your Pocket PC.

SKTools 4.3.2 – Huge array of tools for maintaining your system

September 3rd, 2008

If you’re looking for a complete cleaning, reorqanising and all round general cleansing solution for your Windows Mobile device, then SKTools comes packed with a bunch of tools to make your life easier.

This is a genuinely powerful maintenance toolkit with so many tools included it’s hard to know where to start. All of them combine to ensure that your registry is clean, your hard drive spic and span and that your RAM is completely flushed clean. Tools at your disposal include those to clear your temporary and cache folders such as IE contents, IE history, Mail attachments, Terminal Server client cache, Opera cache, NetFront cache and custom folders. In addition the program finds and deletes temporary, empty and obsolete files, malicious or corrupted registry keys and values, faulty shortcuts and other files that are deemed to be taking up valuable space on your portable device but are not needed anymore. It also of course empties recycle bins and deletes temporary files. The FreeUP RAM tool is probably one of the nicest feature of this toolkit allowing you to free up to 50K-2M of RAM. It can be set to kick in whenever your RAM reaches below a certain point and close tasks that are hogging your RAM. Note however that it can sometimes struggle to deal with excessive RAM usage and end up slowing down your system more than speeding it up.

This is a handy set of tools for Windows mobile devices that does an efficient job although apart from the RAM cleaner, doesn’t perform anything you wouldn’t normally expect from such a package.

PocketCAS 1.2.1 – Solve advanced mathematical problems on your PDA

September 3rd, 2008

If you need to carry a powerful calculator around all the time for either your work or studies then perhaps it’s time you minimized your baggage by installing PocketCAS on your Pocket PC.

PocketCAS is a free scientific calculator that allows you to perform complex equations on your mobile device. In fact, it’s just as powerful as even some of the most advanced pocket calculators on the marketing. Among its capabilities, PocketCAS enables you to perform symbolic and numeric integration and derivation of non-trivial functions, and to solve differential equations.

PocketCAS also boasts support for a huge range of linear algebra problems, like solving linear equation systems, multiplying and inverting matrices, finding eigenvalues (and eigenvectors, of course) and much more.

The PocketCAS environment is fully programmable and it contains a number of predefined keys for much quicker inputting.

Bear in mind that PocketCAS is designed to perform advanced mathematics, and if you just want a calculator for more simple equations, this one may confuse you a tad, especially as there is little help inside the program.

Nevertheless, PocketCAS makes for an excellent scientific calculator for Windows Mobile.

Xilisoft DVD to Pocket PC Ripper 5.0.40.0729 – Convert DVD to Pocket PC formats

September 3rd, 2008

If you’ve got a Pocket PC then did you know you can convert it into a portable DVD player too with just a few clicks?

Xilisoft DVD to Pocket PC Ripper is a fast and easy to use DVD ripper which helps you rip DVD to Pocket PC supported file formats. The quality of conversions is generally excellent and the conversions speeds are fast. However, note that this may not work as well with all portable PCs. The developers claim that it has been optimised for use with HP, Dell, Toshiba and other popular brands but there can be no guarantees for other brands. The program allows you a certain level of control over such aspects as bitrate and video size although the number of formats it can convert to seem generally limited to WMV, MP3 and WMA. Overall, the interface is simple and easy to navigate around with a preview window in the bottom left to help you review conversion or select which part of a DVD you want to convert.

Fast and easy to use, this conversion tool could do with converting to a few more formats but it’s more than enough for most Pocket PC user’s needs.

TouchLauncher 1.2.1 – Make your Palm look like an iPhone

September 2nd, 2008

We’re always being told that Palm is now pretty much a dead platform but if you’re still using one of these devices you needn’t worry too much that you’re falling behind the times because there are plenty of ways to customize your handset to freshen it up a bit.

TouchLauncher provides you with the power to transform your Palm to resemble something far more modern and cutting-edge, namely, the iPhone. In order to start skinning your OS you’ll need to install the application file and the iFone icon set, both of which come bundled together in the same Zip.

Before you launch the app you get the chance to scan the memory of your PDA in order to automatically add icons of applications into TouchLauncher and remove deleted applications from the program. Once you finally get the program running you’ll be staggered by the quality of icons in this pack, which are remarkable faithful to the Apple device. In fact, it left me wondering how Steve Jobs would react if he clapped eyes on TouchLauncher (no doubt a phone call to his lawyer would be foremost in his mind.)

The software is highly customizable and you can not only select icons for individual for each each of your installed applications from your icon sets, but also to categorize and change the name that appears underneath each utility of icon. Make sure you have plenty of RAM allocated on your device though, because TouchLauncher is a bit of a memory-hogger.

If you’re fed up with your mates mocking your Palm then TouchLauncher provides a great way to turn their sneers into gasps.

Cuckoo Clock 5.0 – Emulate a cuckoo clock on your Palm

September 2nd, 2008

They may not like fighting, but the Swiss are sure into their cuckoo clocks and if you’re a fan of this particular kind of timepiece then this mobile app will ring your bell. The program is capable of emulating a cuckoo clock to measure the passing of time.

Cuckoo Clock can function in two ways. It can identify the start of each hour by playing a single tone, or tell you what hour it is by playing the corresponding number of ‘cuckoos’.

Although this is a fairly basic program there are a few options you can mess around with, including choosing one of three sounds (a bell, a cuckoo, or a bell and cuckoo combo), and defining the volume level based on the time of day. This means you can make the cuckoo sound quieter at night, which is very handy for sleeping.

If you want to impress your buddies with an accurate cuckoo sound every hour, this app is perfect, although the constant clucking soon becomes annoying.
