Croker 1.1 – Colourful version of Poker with French cards

August 29th, 2008 No comments

If you like Poker but can’t quite pull the right face at the right moment perhaps you should be looking for a similar yet slightly simpler card game. And that card game could be Croker. Instead of numbers in Croker you play with pictures – frogs, pigs, dice and baskets of fruit. It’s the way the French play, apparently.

As with Poker the aim of the game is to make the best possible hand from five cards and like Poker the possible combinations include pairs, three of a kind, a full house or four of a kind. Each time the cards are played a round of betting occurs until players are ready to show all their cards and see who’s won.

The animated cards are very colourful and you get to play computer opponents but there are only two levels of difficulty easy and hard which is a bit annoying.

If you like Poker you’ll have fun with Croker, and if you like cards games with pigs and lightbulbs you’ll probably really enjoy it too.

Hexxagon Labs 1.0 – Join the hexagons to score points

August 29th, 2008 No comments

If you’re a fan of puzzle games and are bored of the same old formats then Hexxagon Labs may make for a refreshing change.

Kind-of an Othello with hexagons, Hexxagon Labs sees you tackle a series of mind-boggling quests over a series of complex levels. The aim of the game is to fill as many of the spaces on the board as possible by moving around strategically and capturing enemy pieces.

It’s pretty straightforward to get a grasp of the rules of Hexxagon Labs if you’ve played Othello before, but if you haven’t then there are a few tutorial levels to help you on your way. It’s all great fun, and the inclusion of scientific facts along the way helps add to the enjoyment factor.

Hexxagon Labs is well presented – the graphics are nice and colorful and the sounds are chirpy if not a little annoying. The only real problem with the game is that there just aren’t enough levels, and the control system is slightly fiddly.

On the whole though, Hexxagon Labs provides a fun way to kill some time.

Google Maps for Windows Mobile 2.2.0.16 – Enjoy Google Maps from your mobile

August 29th, 2008 No comments

It’s not always practical to carry a map around with you to help you get to where your going. If you find yourself getting lost on a regular basis, or if you’re a keen traveller then this Smartphone download is the one for you. Besides offering digital urban road maps and satellite views, Google Maps for Windows Mobile furnishes you with a bevy of other cool features.

Built on the popular online app, this program includes an address search with location determination and a built-in route planner. The zoom function is arguably easier to handle than on a PC though clever use of the joystick or soft keys. If you have GPS functionality on your phone, the Google Maps is even better because it can show you your current position on the screen.

The search is as straightforward as ever and also allows you to look for points of interest such as cinemas, shops or restaurants, although the frequency of these will vary depending on where in the World you’re looking at. You can even program your own favourites, so that you never need to forget where that nice bar you visited was.

Provided you have flat rate Internet access on your phone to cover the large amount of data it downloads, Google Maps represents the perfect way to ensure you always know where you’re going.
