Ma Tirelire 2.1 – Programmable bank account manager

July 28th, 2008 No comments

Taking care of your bank accounts has got to be one of the most mundane day-to-day chores. Install Ma Tirelire on your Palm though, and things get much easier.

Despite its rather silly name, Ma Tirelire is actually a seriously comprehensive mobile money management tool, allowing you to make financial decisions while you’re on the move. You can set up multiple accounts in Ma Tirelire, allowing you to organize your personal, business, or archived accounts simply in tandem.

The text-heavy user interface is a little daunting at first and it takes a while to get used to the location of the various menus and commands Ma Tirelire has to offer. Once you do though, you’ll be amazed at how powerful the application is. You can manage everything from day-to-day transactions, through transactions splits, to inter-account transfers.

One of my favorite things about Ma Tirelire is its support for direct typing and macros, which serve to make it easier to enter transactions quickly, as you have a pre-made template for recording movements. Add to this tools for tracking checks, updating exchange rates, and a wealth of useful statistics, and Ma Tirelire represents a very useful tool for keeping your finances in order.

If you have a bank account and you have a Palm device, I highly recommend installing Ma Tirelire.

Outcast 1.2.1 – Group shapes together in this intelligent puzzle game

July 28th, 2008 No comments

Palms are great for playing puzzle games, and I’ve lost count of the number of trains, business meetings or dates I’ve missed through being immersed in some riddle or other.

Outcast is the latest brain-bender I’ve tried and it’s definitely got a high distraction factor. The object of the game is to organize the different patterns into groups. You need to start by moving one piece away from the edge and then filling the space with another piece that matches one of those around it. You keep doing this until you’ve grouped as many pieces together as you can.

There are certain rules you need to abide by when moving people and these are all outlined in the Help section. It will probably take you about three or four reads to understand it completely, as it’s not written in a very clear manner.

Once you get going you’ll find it hard to stop playing such is the addictive nature of this one. It’s surprisingly difficult to master and I defy you to complete all the groupings – I certainly haven’t! Even if you do then there are three different grouping set-ups you can try.

It might not be much to look at, but Outcast is certainly one of the more engrossing and original puzzle games out there.

TouchLauncher 1.1.6 – Make your Palm look like an iPhone

July 28th, 2008 No comments

We’re always being told that Palm is now pretty much a dead platform but if you’re still using one of these devices you needn’t worry too much that you’re falling behind the times because there are plenty of ways to customize your handset to freshen it up a bit.

TouchLauncher provides you with the power to transform your Palm to resemble something far more modern and cutting-edge, namely, the iPhone. In order to start skinning your OS you’ll need to install the application file and the iFone icon set, both of which come bundled together in the same Zip.

Before you launch the app you get the chance to scan the memory of your PDA in order to automatically add icons of applications into TouchLauncher and remove deleted applications from the program. Once you finally get the program running you’ll be staggered by the quality of icons in this pack, which are remarkable faithful to the Apple device. In fact, it left me wondering how Steve Jobs would react if he clapped eyes on TouchLauncher (no doubt a phone call to his lawyer would be foremost in his mind.)

The software is highly customizable and you can not only select icons for individual for each each of your installed applications from your icon sets, but also to categorize and change the name that appears underneath each utility of icon. Make sure you have plenty of RAM allocated on your device though, because TouchLauncher is a bit of a memory-hogger.

If you’re fed up with your mates mocking your Palm then TouchLauncher provides a great way to turn their sneers into gasps.

Memory Scanner 3.0 – Scan your memory in seconds

July 28th, 2008 No comments

Memory Scanner will find anything on your Palm even if you can’t remember where the hell it is. The software works by scanning literally every nook and cranny of your mobile’s memory and making sure that any file you need is pulled out of hiding. The scanner provides a fast directory search of system entries, application data and personal data through applications, doc files, preferences, user data, pretty much everything really.

The results can be viewed in either text mode or binary and it’s fairly fast – it will look through the entire ROM and RAM memories in seconds. The specified search speeds this up even more. If you’re someone who needs help finding files on your phone then Memory Scanner will certainly help.

FileZilla 3.1.0.1 – Secure and fast FTP transfers

July 28th, 2008 No comments

You could pretty much consider FileZilla an open source success story. It’s popular, works well and fast, and regularly updated.

If you’re looking for a solid FTP client what more could you ask more? In fact, FileZilla is not just limited to FTP, but also handles FTPS and SFTP for secure transfers of multiple files on multiple servers. The interface gives you a quick outlook of all your transfers, sites and disks and makes it easy to drag and transfer. I also quite like the QuickConnect feature to access your favorite server in seconds.

FileZilla is known to be fairly fast, and can also resume downloads and handle very big transfers, I’m talking here higher than 4 GB. You can set both local and remote filters for things like images, explorer files or CVS and SVN directories or even create your own. FileZilla also includes a tool to compare directories in terms of file size or modification time.

The application can guide you when setting up your network and lets you set speed limits in case you don’t want to overload your bandwidth.

One thing really missing from FileZilla though is a scheduler to automatically set transfer times.

Despite lacking a scheduler, FileZilla is an excellent open source FTP client. It’s stable, fast and very efficient. Highly recommended.

XnView 1.94.1 – Manage multimedia files and all possible image formats

July 28th, 2008 No comments

XnView, simply put, is a file explorer. What makes it a bit special is that instead of treating every file as equal, it tries to make sense of each and every one and let you see, in the most relevant form possible, what exactly is contained in the file.

When checking this program out, we were immediately reminded of another quality file previewer, ACDSee. While that has gone on to become a fully featured photo manager, available for $50, XnView will take care of most users’ basic needs while boasting a price tag of $0 (for personal use). With its built-in preview engine, the program can display 400 different image file formats as well as play various media formats such as AVI or MP3.

Using the program will already be second nature to most users as it works like Windows Explorer. On the left side of the screen you see all your directories, with the contents of the directories being displayed in the upper half of the right window. Selecting any of these files will then bring up a preview in the lower half of the window. If you’re browsing through some photos you can run them as a slideshow and view in full screen. If you’re browsing through simple TXT or INI files, the opening few lines of text will show up as an icon and you can view the entire contents of the file without needing to open other programs.

There is a good level of support for various formats and the interface zips along without delays, even when displaying large video files. On encountering a file that it doesn’t recognize, XnView displays its hash values, which may or may not be of use. If you run into any difficulty, there is a help file that is sufficient but not overwhelming.

One aspect that wasn’t quite as we would have liked was that it didn’t recognize the native format of files. For example, a simple text file with a LOG extension wasn’t treated as the same file with a TXT extension. It’s a small inconvenience but does stand out because of the general high quality of the software. For anyone with a large number of files that they want to organize, convert or just browse, XnView is certainly worth a look.

Dropclock Screensaver 1.0.1 – Beautiful screensaver with numbers dropping into water

July 28th, 2008 No comments

You’re sitting in front of the computer, watching time as it goes by… well, now with DropClock you can literally watch time dropping into water.

DropClock awesome screensaver shows a bunch of thick, huge numbers in white Helvetica, falling from the top of your screen into water. The whole scene in DropClock is recorded in very slow motion, capturing every single detail in the number’s movement and the reaction of water as they drop into it.

DropClock is not only a very relaxing screensaver, but also a very original way to check time, because the numbers shown on the screen are not random figures: they show the current time. On the downside, it doesn’t have any configuration options and the file is too heavy for a screensaver.

DropClock is a beautiful screensaver that displays current time in a very original, relaxing way.

WinBubble 1.74 – Give Vista a tweak and a turn

July 28th, 2008 No comments

WinBubble helps you customize and tweak your Windows Vista easily. It features customization, security and and optimization options for an all-in one solution.

The first thing that strikes you is the sheer number of features this program has. It’s absolutely ram packed with options that will keep you tweaking and fiddling with Windows Vista until the cows come home. The program features a “My Tweaker Tool” which allows you to create your own tweaker customized exactly how you want it. You can add, edit and delete DVD and CD drive names and labels, and the program now features full support for tweaking and optimizing Firefox.

It also supports Internet Explorer with the additional bonus that you can delete specific IE URLs. The program has been further enhanced by allowing it to update automatically instead of having to visit the developer homepage. Don’t be fooled by the small file size – this program has plenty of features, many of which seem unique and original to WinBubble.

The name WinBubble doesn’t really fit the program but there’s no taking away from the fact that this is an excellent tweaker and optimizer for Vista fans.

Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 – View e-mail and news the way you want it

July 28th, 2008 No comments

So you’ve made the leap and installed the versatile internet browser, Firefox, but are you ready to trade in your Outlook Express for Mozilla’s open source mail application? Thunderbird is Mozilla’s award winning and free solution to manage your mail more efficiently.

Thunderbird woos users thanks to its flurry of options and the benefits of an open source application. Automatic updates ensure that you have the latest version of Thunderbird, preventing any security threats and offering you new features as soon as they’re available.

The biggest worry for users is switching from one mail application to another and losing precious information. With Thunderbird the switch is painless because you can quickly import your mail and contacts from your Outlook and set up your POP3 or IMAP account is a snap. To stay well organized we suggest that you take advantage of Thunderbird’s filters. While this option is nothing new to the experienced Outlook user, you’ll come to see that Thunderbird makes filters much more accessible, thanks to a simple selection of combinations and actions. Create distinct folders for your personal and professional mail and your newsletters and associate them with filters to avoid the hassle of constantly sorting your mail. Another feature we could single out is the integrated spell checker, a blessing if you send many emails and can’t be bothered to constantly verify your writing.

Although it isn’t visible right away, Thunderbird also features an RSS reader. Handy if you need to follow the news or specialist websites, this tool fits seamlessly into Thunderbird and you could almost forget that it is a mail application. Paste in the RSS feed from your favorite news source and the main messages window will reveal a list of all the latest feeds. The message pane is used as an integrated browser window to display the selected article.

Email is the number one source of viruses, that’s why Thunderbird offers various levels of message encryption, a spam filter and support for valid certificates. We found the spam filter particularly effective. Set it to “learn” mode, and it teaches itself to separate the valid email from the rest of the junk. You have to be mindful of this option though, because Thunderbird can become too restrictive and may decide on its own that one of your friends is suddenly persona non grata. Reviewing your junk folder every now and then should avoid you accidentally losing friends. Thunderbird also automatically turns off Javascript and by default does not load remote images, a good way to defuse the risk of viruses from dodgy emails.

Another known feature of the Mozilla line of products is customization. Just as with Firefox, Thunderbird can integrate a slew of extensions and add-ons to rev up your inbox. You can also add or remove icons from the actions pane, selecting the ones you use most frequently.

The one place where Thunderbird fails, and professionals will confirm this, is the failure to integrate Microsoft Exchange support. An essential tool in any work environment, the collaborative messaging software is sorely missed in Thunderbird and seriously limits its usefulness in offices. Furthermore, we can question why Mozilla included an RSS reader yet failed to incorporate a calendar, standard in most mail applications nowadays.

While the lack of proper business minded features will limit Thunderbird’s point in the workplace, the simplicity, customizability and security make it a number one choice for home users. If you’re worried about your safety on the Internet or are just looking for a more efficient way of handling your mail, Thunderbird is probably the best solution out there.

Double Driver 1.2 – Backup all drivers installed on your system

July 28th, 2008 No comments

One of the most boring parts of reinstalling the operating system is having to find and install all drivers again. Luckily Double Driver can now lend you a hand with that.

Double Driver analyzes your system and creates a list with all the drives currently installed on your system. Each entry on the list features detailed information about the driver: version, date, provider, etc. But that’s not all: Double Driver also includes a backup tool that has been specifically developed to create a security copy of all your drivers.

Double Driver lets you back all drivers up – or just some selected ones – and restore them whenever you need them back. Surprisingly enough, drivers are not saved as a single archive but as separate folders instead (one for each driver) which makes it a bit less convenient.

With Double Driver you can easily create a backup copy of all your drivers and restore it any time you need it.
