Notepad++ Portable 5.0.2 – Text editing on the move

July 31st, 2008

If you like Notepad++, you’ll love Notepad++ Portable. It keeps the same great functionality of its big brother, but in a new edition specially designed to be stored and used in a USB memory key.

Once installed, the application hardly takes 2 MB of space, so it’s suitable even for the smallest removable drives. During our tests, we didn’t miss anything from good ol’ Notepad++: support for dozens of coding languages and several text file formats, syntax highlighting, ability to open multiple documents simultaneously and lots of extra tools.

The only downside to this great little application, if we’re to find any, is the fact that you have to download spelling files apart if you want to use the spellcheck. Apart from that, Notepac++ Portable is probably one of the best text editors available… and you can carry around in your pocket!

FoxyTunes Extension 3.0.4.1 – Control your music from Firefox

July 31st, 2008

One of the best Firefox extensions you’ll find, FoxyTunes lets you control any media player from your browser.

FoxyTunes is really the ideal add-on if you listen to your music all the time and are tired of switching back and forth between your browser and your media player. The extension fits discreetly at the bottom of your browser window, and includes all the basic playback buttons. You can also have it appear as a floating window, called FoxyTunes Mini. Advanced users will also enjoy being able to control it via keyboard shortcuts.

What makes FoxyTunes such an exceptional add-on though is its customizability. Not only can you add all sorts of skins, but you can also associate with any of the most popular media player, including online services like Last.FM, Pandora or Rhapsody Online. And since Yahoo! has acquired FoxyTunes you’ll also now get fresh content from Yahoo! News and Yahoo! Music related to the music you’re playing.

Via FoxyTunes Planet, which opens up in a new browser window, you can get search for any track, album or artist and get all sorts of content such as video, articles or audio from your results.

Despite the volume slider not being very precise, FoxyTunes is the ultimate Firefox extension for music lovers. It works with any player and also displays additional content on the music you’re playing.

The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is an invaluable resource for anyone looking to enjoy video and audio on their Windows PC. Frequently updated, it includes all the codecs available in three of the most popular codec packs available on Softonic.

K-Lite Codec Pack Full 4.1.0 – A complete collection of codecs and related tools

July 31st, 2008

Sometimes when you try to play music or a movie in your computer, you may find that either the image or the sound are not being properly played. These issues are probably a question of codecs, and you can solve them all with K-Lite Codec Pack.

This comprehensive kit includes all the codecs you need to have on your system if you want to play all audio and video formats without any problems. The full package includes quite a bunch of codecs, but the good thing is that you can choose which ones to install and which ones to leave out during the installation process.

Besides codecs, the K-Lite Codec Pack also includes several utilities that can come in very handy when dealing with audio and video files. Among others, you’ll find tools to tweak and fix codecs, work with subtitles and obtain detailed information about any selected media file.

The only drawback I could point out about K-Lite Codec Pack is that it all may seem confusing for the novice user who doesn’t really know what a codec is, and therefore can’t really choose which ones to install. My advice here is to simply install all of them: it’s the only way to make sure you’ll be able to play pretty much any audio or video file on your PC.

K-Lite Codec Pack is a full featured collection of codecs that enables you to play just about any audio and video format on your PC without any problems.

iSkoot 1.1 – Connect to Skype on your Pocket PC

July 30th, 2008

Skype is great for making free or cheaper calls from your computer. But what if you’re out and about and want to speak to your Skype contacts on the move? Then you need iSkoot.

iSkoot is a free program that puts Skype on your Pocket PC. As a result, you can make calls to people, chat via IM and even receive Skype calls to your mobile. You can also use iSkoot to make cheaper international calls using the SkypeOut service.

Setting up iSkoot is a painless procedure. You just need to select your model, download the installer and enter your Skype ID and password once the client is installed (you can create a new account if you need to). Your Skype contacts are automatically displayed and you can start calling right away by clicking on the name. Anyone familiar with Skype will be able to pick it up straight away, but there is a handy online help section if you need some assistance.

Call quality in iSkoot is generally excellent, and data connection speeds aren’t really an issue, due to the way the system works. iSkoot basically connects you to a server which is in turn connected to the voice network via a regular mobile call. The only problem with this method is that it means you may get hit with long distance call charges, since you don’t know what the number will be until the iSkoot server makes the call. The upshot of this is that if you’re using your phone abroad you could end up racking up a large bill calling home as you will get hit with roaming charges. For making Skype calls in your own country though, the service is great as you bypass the need to pay call charges.

Provided you’re only using it close to home, iSkoot offers a great way to chat cheaply on your mobile.

iContact 0.76 – View your contacts using intertia scrolling

July 30th, 2008

One of the features of the iPhone that blew me away was the way you can scroll through your list of contacts by tapping your finger on the screen and dragging it down the list. iContact rips this feature for Windows Mobile devices, allowing you to use your forefinger, index finger, or even your pinky, to peruse your contacts using a system that’s sensitive to forces of acceleration and deceleration, known as ‘inertia scrolling’.

The program enables you to list all your contacts alphabetically, scrolling includes inertia and allows you access to the details of each contact with a simple tap. It works okay, but it’s far from seemless, and if you have a PDA with a lightweight processor then you’ll experience some degree of lag when scrolling, which gets annoying after a while. It’s still in development stage though so hopefully these problems will be ironed out before too long.

While it’s rather a crude copy of the iPhone’s fluid intertia scrolling capabilities, iContact provides an interesting way of listing contacts for those with a powerful enough processor.

WMWifiRouter 1.05 – Turn your Pocket PC into a router

July 30th, 2008

Since getting wireless installed at home, I can never imagine being chained to a modem ever again and love the fact that I can do my banking in bed or check the football results in the bath (in theory obviously. Don’t try that at home).

If you want wireless but don’t fancy buying a wireless router, or if you’re trying to establish a connection away from home then get a load of WMWifiRouter. As the name suggests, the program transforms your Pocket PC into a mobile router for wireless Internet access.

The free software utilises the UMTS or EDGE protocols to link up with others connected via wireless devices. The application takes a bit of setting up and you’ll need to enter lots of data concerning the wireless network. Unfortunately there’s precious little help available within the program itself for doing this.

Once all these settings have been established, the program automatically sets up an ad-hoc network called ‘WMWifiRouter’. If, for any reason the installation fails you can access the appropriate network parameters via WMWifiRouter_NoNet.CAB.

If you have the patience to get the thing set up, WMWifiRouter provides you with a handy way to use your Pocket PC as a wireless router.

TapTapSMS 0.31 – Speed up your texting

July 30th, 2008

Now here’s an interesting new idea for sending text messages that appears to want to fill a niche for people who hate predictive text but don’t like taking ages clicking through different choices of letters to write each word. What TapTapSMS offers is something in between. When you upload the software the screen shows six large panels. Four of these contain six consecutive letters, one contains the letters y and z and four symbols and the last contains six other punctuation signs.

When you want to write a letter you click on the corresponding panel which then converts the six main panels so they each contain one of the letters from the first panel eg click on the ‘a,b,c,d,e,f’ panel and the letters are divided between each of the six panels. Then click the correct panel to write a letter and return to the original display to choose another. It takes some time but once your brain works out where all the letters are spread it is quick and easy. And it does relieve the stress of predictive text, if you hate that. However, if you choose the wrong first panel you then have to choose to write an incorrect letter to return to the first display so you can delete it. It’s an interesting idea, whether it succeeds is another thing.
