Tag Clinic 4.3.2.5 – Tag editor/file renamer for MP3, WMA, OGG, APE, FLAC, MPC, & VQF files

The idea behind Tag Clinic is simple; a program that will make editing or reformatting your MP3 tags a quick and painless experience. In truth though, what you get is an excellent solution that has been so packed with features that at times it is unnecessarily complex to use.

Although it’s far from bloated in terms of the strain it puts on your processor Tag Clinic loses points for the sheer quantity of options that are presented to the user on the main interface. The design of the interface does you no favors either and the glut of buttons littering the three-windowed menu only serves to confuse you.

Once you finally manage to find the directory containing your music you can begin to experience the powerful features of Tag Clinic. There is a huge number of options for interacting with tags, the most advanced of which must be the auto-extract feature, which will look at the file name and use any details from it to fill in the ID3 tag information for titles, artists, albums and tracks. Formatting the text is also a breeze with options to capitalize the first letters or eliminate any spaces from between words.

Although this is a program for editing tags, it seems to be incomplete because of the lack of an internal player and if you want to preview files you must open your default player. We would also like very much to see some kind of CDDB integration that would pull relevant information about albums from the internet repository.

With its direct editing of tag entries, Tag Clinic does offer a very efficient way to edit your music library’s details; However it could do with a major interface re-design and a few more MP3-relevant features to make the experience that bit more user- friendly.

Paragon Encrypted Disk SE 3 – Encrypt all of your personal data

Sadly, data theft is an incresingly common crime these days and there are plenty of digital bandits who would be only to willing to pilfer your files for juicy information. Aside from learning the finer points of cryptography yourself, you could install Paragon Encrypted Disk to create ‘images’ in which data is encoded.

These images can be either ‘mounted’ or ‘unmounted’. When a disk is mounted, it means it is active and you can use it like any other local disk, copying files and folders, and creating and editing new files. The difference is that the disk is totally encrypted with powerful algorithms, which are completly transparent, leaving you free to get on with your work without having to worry about the data being unsecured.

When you unmount a disk it means its contents are completly unaccessible anymore. You can then write this container file to any compact media such as a CD, DVD or USB stick and always carry the encrypted disk with you without fear of someone getting hold of your data if you lose it. Thanks to a series of wizards, the program is simple to operate and performs the necessary encryption pretty quickly.

Active Desktop Calendar 7.2.070827 – Customizable PIM on your desktop wallpaper

This fully customizable calendar features notes, tasks, alarms, and displays its data on your desktop through blending with existing wallpaper. You can organize your data in layers and share them with other people on a local area network. Active Desktop Calendar can integrate with Outlook and show its appointments and tasks on the desktop. If you synchronize your PDA device (Pocket PC, Palm, smartphone) with Outlook then through this connection you also get a synchronization with PDA as a side effect.

There are options for changing calendar icons, fonts and colors, marking weekdays of choice and marking dates with notes and/or alarms. You can have a text only version of the calendar and choose between displaying one, two or three months on the desktop. Recurrence patterns are available for both notes and alarms. An alarm can be stand alone or attached to a note. If interactive desktop option is enabled, the program accepts direct clicks on dates, notes and tasks displayed on the desktop.

You can set each note to normal, private or invisible desktop view. Private notes are displayed as generic text reminder and invisible notes are not displayed at all. Printing calendar data is easy and includes an option to choose date range for printing notes.

Special desktop pictures option allows you to add some of your pictures to existing desktop background. Comma separated values .CSV format is supported for data export and import. Finally, Active Desktop Calendar comes with world clock screen saver that shows your computer’s system time, plus five major time zones around the world.

Stickman 4.8 – Easily create cartoon animations

Stickman is a 2D animation tool that is supposed to make animated cartoon creation much easier. And I say supposed because I’ve faced great difficulties when testing this program.

The upside to Stickman is that it includes a vast catalog of ready-to-use backgrounds, figures and all kinds of elements. Being an online database, we strongly recommend that you download it to your hard drive so that it’s always available for you.

But in spite of that, I personally didn’t find the program that easy to use. There was no default scene included to begin working with and I couldn’t even put a single character onto a background scene. Luckily enough, Stickman includes video tutorials and very complete documentation, so after struggling with the program for a while, I was able to produce something. My advice then would be to be patient and read the documentation carefully if you want to take advantage of Stickman’s possibilities.
